Are ChatGPT and Perplexity the same product?

No. ChatGPT is a general assistant — writing, images, voice, coding tools. Perplexity is an answer engine that cites sources by default. You can force ChatGPT to browse; you cannot make Perplexity into a custom-GPT workshop. Different jobs.

Why do so many countries show the same price?

Because both sit on the same Apple tiers in a lot of markets. Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Turkey, Japan, Egypt, the UK, and Hungary currently match on our dated rows. Canada and Brazil match too. The Philippines is the split: ChatGPT is ₱999 and Perplexity is ₱1,290.

Is Perplexity cheaper if I pay annually?

Perplexity has advertised a year-up-front option on its own site. OpenAI's help center says Plus has no annual billing. Our dated table is monthly App Store prices, so we are not going to rank a $200 web year against a $19.99 iOS month as if they were the same plan.

I still see Perplexity listed at $5 in Egypt. Is that real?

Not on our check. Several roundups still quote old Egyptian prices around EGP 279. The Egyptian App Store row we verified on August 29, 2026 is EGP 999.99, about $19.84 — effectively the US price. Turkey is the same story: ₺999.99, about $20.86.

Does Perplexity have a student price?

Yes, Perplexity runs an education discount on Pro for eligible students. The cut is real; the eligibility checks are real too. Details on our Perplexity student page. ChatGPT's 2026 Back to School offer was a limited free-Plus window via SheerID, not a permanent cheap student plan.

Will a VPN alone get me a cheaper price on either one?

No. Website billing follows the card and billing country. App billing follows the Apple or Google account country. A VPN is not a payment method.

ChatGPT is cheaper in USD: ChatGPT Philippines $16.16 versus Perplexity Pakistan $17.69. Same plan names only — do not mix seats.

ChatGPT is cheaper than Perplexity in USD on the cheapest verified rows: ChatGPT Plus in the Philippines is $16.16, while Perplexity Pro bottoms out in Pakistan at $17.69. Both figures were checked August 29, 2026.

Then look at the rest of the table and the plot twist arrives: in a long list of App Store countries, ChatGPT vs Perplexity is not a price fight at all. Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Turkey, Japan, Canada, Brazil, Egypt, the UK, and Hungary currently print the same local number for both flagship plans. The Philippines is where they stop being twins — ₱999 versus ₱1,290.

That is the opposite of the internet’s usual “they’re both $20, pick on features” piece, which happens to be true in the US and accidentally true in ten other countries, and false in Manila.

Are these the same product?

No. Paying $20 for the wrong one feels like a price problem. It is a job problem.

Perplexity Pro is what you want when the output has to survive a link check — research, news, anything you would be embarrassed to paste without a source. Citations are the product, not a toggle. Pro also lets you hop between several frontier models per query, which ChatGPT Plus does not. Perplexity has advertised annual billing on its own website; we date monthly App Store rows, so those are separate invoices.

ChatGPT Plus is what you want when the job is broader than “answer this with links”: drafting, images, voice, custom GPTs, Codex. OpenAI’s help center prices Plus at $20 a month and says annual billing is not offered. The cheaper Go plan exists at $8 in the US if you needed more volume than free and not the full Plus toolkit.

There is no family plan on Perplexity. One Pro login is one person. Shared “cheap Pro” accounts get revoked. Don’t.

Where each one is genuinely cheap

Barely, on either side. ChatGPT’s remaining real discount is the Philippines. Perplexity’s is Pakistan and Canada — the same 11–12% band Claude sits in, because they often share Apple tiers.

India is not cheap for either (₹1,999 = $20.88). Turkey is not cheap for either after 2026 repricing. Hungary and the UK are a surcharge.

How do you actually pay for each one?

ChatGPT web: cards, UPI on the cheaper India plans, Pix, GoPay, Korean wallets. Gift cards did not work on web checkout. Guide: How to pay for ChatGPT Plus.

Perplexity: website (USD vs local currency is a choice that then sticks until you cancel) or the app stores. Perplexity’s own country guide notes that India-based web subscribers currently cannot bill in rupees — USD only. App Store rows are local currency. Those two paths are not the same invoice.

Same as every other $20 AI plan. IP is not billing. Skip it.

US and most App Store countries we checked: same money. Pick the job. Citations and multi-model research → Perplexity. General assistant → ChatGPT.

Philippines: ChatGPT is the only one still on the ₱999 tier. That is a real $4.70/month gap.
