Are ChatGPT and Gemini the same product?

No. OpenAI sells a chatbot. Google sells a chatbot bundled with storage and Gemini inside Gmail, Docs, and Photos. A cancelled OpenAI subscription does not touch your Google account, and the reverse is also true.

Do they cost the same in the United States?

On the main individual plan, yes: both are $19.99 on the App Store rows we verified August 29, 2026. OpenAI's help center still lists Plus at $20 a month with no annual billing. Google's AI Pro plan is the one that also throws in a large Google One storage allotment, so the sticker is the same and the bundle is not.

Who is cheaper outside the US?

It flips. ChatGPT is cheaper in the Philippines ($16.16 vs $17.79) and Pakistan ($17.69 vs $20.22). Gemini is cheaper in Indonesia ($17.33 vs $19.57), Turkey ($18.15 vs $20.86), Brazil ($18.62 vs $19.20), and the UK ($25.74 vs $27.10). Always read the country you actually pay in.

Does each one have a cheaper plan under the $20 tier?

Yes, both. OpenAI sells Go at $8 in the US. Google sells AI Plus, and our dated rows put that lower tier around $4.17–$4.99 depending on the country. Those cheaper plans are not the same product as Plus or AI Pro — lower limits, and on OpenAI's side the US ads test includes Go.

Is Gemini cheaper because of the storage?

Only if you would have paid for that storage anyway. Google's AI Pro plan includes a large Google One allotment (our Gemini country guide treats it as 5 TB on the current US plan). If your Photos library is already bursting, that bundle is real money. If you live in iCloud, you are paying for a drive you will not open.

Will a VPN alone get me a cheaper price on either one?

No. Billing follows the account storefront and the payment method, not the IP. Google Play balance and Apple ID country do not move because you connected to a Singapore server.

ChatGPT is cheaper than Gemini in USD on the cheapest verified rows: ChatGPT Plus in the Philippines is $16.16, while Gemini AI Pro bottoms out in Indonesia at $17.33. Both figures were checked August 29, 2026. In the United States they print the same number — $19.99 — which is why most “ChatGPT vs Gemini” pages call it a tie and then talk about models.

The country table is not a tie. Gemini is the one that still does real regional pricing in Turkey, Indonesia, Brazil, and the UK. ChatGPT is the one that is cheaper in the Philippines and Pakistan. If your blog only quotes San Francisco, you will pick the wrong winner for Jakarta.

Are these the same product?

No. You are not choosing two chat boxes. You are choosing a standalone assistant versus a Google account add-on.

ChatGPT Plus is the OpenAI app: writing, images, voice, custom GPTs, Codex on paid plans. OpenAI’s help center prices Plus at $20 a month and says there is no annual billing. The cheaper Go plan is $8 in the US on our table — more messages than free, not the same model access as Plus, and included in OpenAI’s US ads test along with Free.

Gemini AI Pro is Google One with a Gemini badge. The current US plan bundles a large storage allotment (we treat it as 5 TB in the Gemini cheapest-country guide), Gemini inside Gmail/Docs/Photos, and a higher Gemini usage cap. Google also sells AI Plus under Pro — our dated rows show that lower tier at $4.17 in India and Turkey, $4.21 in Indonesia, and $4.99 in the US. If you wanted “a bit more Gemini” rather than 5 TB, Plus is the plan most comparison pages forget to price.

Student offers exist on Google’s side in some years and regions; they change. Check checkout, not a blog from March.

Where each one is genuinely cheap

Neither one is a “pay $2 in Turkey” product anymore.

ChatGPT’s Turkish Plus price doubled in June 2026 to ₺999.99 (~$20.86), above the US. Gemini Turkey is still a real discount at ₺869.99 ($18.15). If someone is still forwarding you a 2024 Istanbul screenshot, check the date.

India is not a ChatGPT bargain (₹1,999 = $20.88). Gemini India is ₹1,950 = $20.36 — a few cents, not a strategy.

The Philippines is ChatGPT’s remaining meaningful discount (−19%). Indonesia is Gemini’s (−13%). Pakistan is a ChatGPT win and a Gemini premium versus the US ($20.22). Read the row, not the continent.

How do you actually pay for each one?

ChatGPT web: Stripe cards, plus documented local rails (UPI on the two cheaper India plans, Pix, GoPay, Korean wallets). Gift cards did not pay for ChatGPT on the web in any country we checked. Guide: How to pay for ChatGPT Plus.

Gemini: you are in Google’s billing. Play Store, Apple ID, or Google One checkout, depending on how you subscribed. Play balance loaded in one country does not follow you to another. Family sharing on Google One can make AI Pro look cheaper per person if the household already wanted the storage — that math is household-specific, not a sticker we can rank.

What a VPN can and cannot do here

A VPN does not move an Apple ID country or a Google payments profile. Both companies bill the account, then check the card. IP is not billing. We do not recommend VPN arbitrage for either plan.

The bottom line

US sticker: tie at $19.99. Decide by bundle. Already drowning in Google Photos? Gemini’s storage is part of the product. Want a standalone assistant with no Drive attached? ChatGPT.
