ChatGPT is cheaper than Claude in USD on the cheapest verified rows we hold: ChatGPT Plus in the Philippines is $16.16, while Claude Pro bottoms out in Pakistan at $17.69. Both figures were checked August 29, 2026. In the United States the stickers are a rounding-error tie — $19.99 versus $20.00 — which is why almost every “ChatGPT vs Claude” page on the internet stops at “they’re the same price” and then argues about writing quality.
That US-only story is incomplete. In a surprising number of App Store countries the two plans really are the same local price, because both companies sit on the same Apple tiers. Then a few markets break the pattern hard. The Philippines is the loudest example: ChatGPT is ₱999 ($16.16) and Claude is ₱1,290 ($20.87) for the identical month of access. Brazil is the other way you get burned if you assume they move together — ChatGPT is R$99.90 ($19.20) and Claude is R$129.90 ($24.96).
The raw side-by-side board lives at ChatGPT vs Claude. This page is the story behind those numbers, plus what the $20 actually buys on each side.
Which is cheaper, ChatGPT or Claude?
Dated rows only, all verified August 29, 2026. Cheapest verified country for each flagship plan:
| Product | Cheapest verified country | Local price | USD | vs US |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Plus | Philippines | ₱999 | $16.16 | −19% |
| Claude Pro | Pakistan | Rs 4,900 | $17.69 | −12% |
Runners-up, because one country can be a fluke:

|---|---|---|---|

| Claude Pro | Japan $18.86 | Indonesia $19.57 | $20.00 |
At the other end both get expensive in the same places: Hungary is $28.62 on each, and the UK is about $27.10. If you live there, neither vendor is doing you a favour.
Where they actually diverge, same date:

Full proof tables: ChatGPT and Claude.
Two extra rungs the US-sticker pages skip:
- OpenAI sells a budget plan (Go) at $8 in the US. Anthropic has no equivalent under Pro.
- Claude Pro can be $200 a year if you pay annually — about $17 a month. OpenAI’s own help center says Plus, Go, and Pro do not support annual billing. Over a year that is $36–$40 sitting on the table if you were going to pay anyway.
Are these the same product?
No, and treating them as interchangeable gets people banned. ChatGPT Plus comes from OpenAI; Claude Pro comes from Anthropic. Different terms, different accounts, different usage windows. If one subscription dies, the other company owes you nothing.
What $20 actually buys, without inventing a message count neither vendor publishes as a hard daily number:
| ChatGPT Plus | Claude Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| US sticker | $19.99 (App Store) / $20 on OpenAI’s site | $20, or $200/year |
| Cheaper rung | Go at $8 in the US | None |
| Annual discount | None, per OpenAI help | Yes — $200 billed up front |
| Image and voice | Built into the ChatGPT app | Not the reason people pay for Claude |
| Long documents and writing | Capable | This is Claude’s reputation |
| Terminal coding agent | Codex on paid plans | Claude Code is included on Pro |
| Ads | Free and Go have been in a US ads test; Plus is ad-free | No ads on Free or Pro |
Pick by bottleneck, not by a 1-cent US sticker. Volume, images, voice, and a wide plugin-style surface point at ChatGPT. Long-context writing, document work, and Claude Code point at Claude. Plenty of people who can afford $40 keep both; the rest should pick the workload they actually have.
Where each one is genuinely cheap
The “cheap AI country” folklore is mostly dead for both. Turkey used to be the famous ChatGPT bargain. OpenAI doubled the Turkish Plus price in June 2026, to ₺999.99 — about $20.86, which is above the US price. Claude’s Turkish Pro row is the same ₺999.99. Older listicles that still send you to Istanbul are quoting a trip that ended.
India is the other zombie tip. ₹1,999 converts to $20.88 on both. That is not a discount. It is a few cents more than Americans pay.
The remaining discounts are modest:
- ChatGPT: Philippines (−19%), Pakistan (−11%), Canada (−10%).
- Claude: Pakistan (−12%), Japan (−6%), Indonesia (−2%). Then you are at or above the US price.
A VPN-plus-gift-card scheme to save 10–19% is a lot of moving parts for not much money. The honest saving, if any, is your own country’s local price — and for both of these products, most of the world now pays more than the US, not less. Rankings: cheapest country for ChatGPT Plus and cheapest country for Claude Pro.
How do you actually pay for each one?
This is where the vendors differ, and where most comparison pages say nothing.
ChatGPT on the web (chatgpt.com): cards through Stripe almost everywhere. OpenAI also documents local methods — UPI in India on the two cheaper plans (not the top Pro tiers), Pix in Brazil, GoPay in Indonesia, Kakao Pay and Naver Pay in Korea. Apple and Google gift cards did not pay for a ChatGPT web subscription anywhere we checked. Step-by-step: How to pay for ChatGPT Plus.
Claude: the dated rows on this site are App Store prices. That means the charge follows your Apple ID country, and App Store credit can cover the renewal in countries where Apple lets subscriptions draw down account balance. Anthropic’s own site also bills cards directly. Refunds and cancellations follow whichever storefront you used — Apple for an iOS purchase, Anthropic for a web purchase.
Neither vendor officially supports paying with a foreign-issued card while claiming another country’s price. Mismatch the card country and the storefront country and the charge fails, or it works once and dies at renewal.
What a VPN can and cannot do here
A VPN changes which storefront you see, not what you can pay with. To get the Philippine ChatGPT price you need a payment method that Apple or OpenAI will accept as Philippine. The same is true for Pakistani Claude. We do not recommend VPN-based arbitrage on either service. The real number is the one on your own country’s row.
The bottom line
If you only compare US stickers, ChatGPT vs Claude is a feature fight at twenty dollars even. If you compare the cheapest verified countries, ChatGPT still wins — $16.16 versus $17.69 — and it wins by a wide margin in the Philippines and Brazil. Claude’s counter is not the sticker. It is the annual plan, Claude Code, and the writing. Claude also has no $8 rung, so “I just need more messages than free” is a ChatGPT-Go decision, not a Claude decision.
