Does Gemini's storage make it 'free' if I already pay for Google One?

Only if you would have bought that storage anyway. AI Pro includes a large Google One allotment on the current US plan. If you already pay for 2 TB or 5 TB, switching the Google One plan can replace a separate bill. If you do not use Drive or Photos, you are buying a warehouse for empty boxes.

Does Claude have a cheaper plan under Pro?

No. The ladder is Free, Pro, then Max. Google has AI Plus under AI Pro — our dated rows put that lower tier around $4–$5. People who only needed more Gemini than free should price that tier before they pay twenty dollars.

Will a VPN alone get me a cheaper price on either one?

No. Account storefront and payment method set the price. An IP address does not.

Gemini is cheaper than Claude in USD on the cheapest verified rows: Gemini AI Pro in Indonesia is $17.33, while Claude Pro bottoms out in Pakistan at $17.69. Both figures were checked August 29, 2026. That 36-cent catalog gap is not the story. The story is that the two $20 plans stop looking like twins the moment you leave the US sticker — and that Gemini is the one that still discounts Turkey, Indonesia, Brazil, and the UK, while Claude’s remaining discount is basically Pakistan and Japan.

Most “Claude vs Gemini” pages from April 2026 still say “2 TB storage” and “no annual on Gemini.” Treat those as stale. Our Gemini country guide prices the current US AI Pro bundle as 5 TB, and we are not going to invent an annual Google price we have not verified on a dated storefront row. What we have verified is Anthropic’s $200 annual Pro option, which OpenAI still refuses to offer on ChatGPT.

Brazil is the row that should end the “they’re both $20” genre. Claude is almost $25 there. Gemini is $18.62. That is a plan-level gap, not a rounding error.

Are these the same product?

No. Claude is the specialist: long documents, writing that needs less editing, Projects, Artifacts, and Claude Code on Pro (Anthropic’s help center, checked for our Claude worth-it page). Usage is a rolling window, not a cute daily counter — heavy days still stop.

Gemini AI Pro is the generalist-plus-bundle: Gemini in Google apps, Deep Research in Google’s stack, and the Google One storage. If your work already lives in Docs and Gmail, you are not adding a second window. You are turning a feature on. If your work is a repo and a pile of PDFs, Claude is the tool people pay $20 for, and the Google storage is a distraction.

Google’s AI Plus tier under Pro is the other product mix-up. It is not AI Pro. Our dated Plus rows start around $4.17. Claude has no matching rung.

Where each one is genuinely cheap

Claude’s discount map is small. Pakistan −12%, Japan −6%, Indonesia −2%. Canada and the Philippines are above the US. Brazil is a penalty box. Turkey matches the ChatGPT-after-June-2026 world: ₺999.99, above US.

Gemini still looks like a regional-pricing product: Indonesia −13%, Philippines −11%, Turkey −9%, Japan −9%, Brazil −7%. The UK is still expensive versus the US, but cheaper than Claude’s UK row.

If you were quoted “Claude annual at $17 versus Gemini monthly at $19.99” as a US-only trick: the annual option is real on Anthropic’s side. Whether Google will sell you AI Pro by the year at checkout is a question for the Google One screen in your account, not for a blog that guessed $199.99.

How do you actually pay for each one?

Claude: App Store rows on this site, plus Anthropic’s own card checkout. Annual billing is a web/Anthropic decision. iOS purchases refund through Apple.

Gemini: Google One / Play / Apple, depending on how you started. Play balance is storefront-locked. Family sharing can split the Google bill; it cannot split a Claude login.

Neither company wants a foreign card on a cheap-country storefront. Mismatch and you get a decline, or a one-month success and a dead renewal.

What a VPN can and cannot do here

A VPN shows a price. It does not issue a Pakistani card or a Google payments profile in Jakarta. Skip it.

US monthly sticker: a cent. Ignore it.
