Does YouTube Premium have a student plan?

Yes, in the countries where Google offers it. Verification runs through SheerID and has to be renewed every year, for up to four consecutive years.

Is there a trial for the student plan?

Google has typically offered a free trial period on student memberships, and the length shown at checkout varies by country and by promotion. The trial still counts inside your four-year eligibility window, so the clock does not start over if you cancel and rejoin later.

Can I get the student rate while studying abroad?

Usually not for your home country's plan. SheerID checks enrollment at an institution in the same market as your Google account country, so an exchange semester rarely converts into another country's discounted membership. Finish the term first and re-verify when you are back.

What documents does SheerID accept?

Most students are verified instantly from the school name alone. If instant checks fail, SheerID asks for proof such as an enrolment letter, class schedule, or transcript showing you are a full-time student at an approved higher-education institution.

Do I lose the discount if my school is not listed?

Yes. Eligibility of institutions is decided entirely by SheerID's program. If your school is not in their database, you cannot verify, and Google will not sell you the student plan regardless of your actual status.

Does the student plan include YouTube Music?

Yes. The student membership carries the same benefits as Individual, including YouTube Music Premium access. It is single-member, so there is no family sharing.

What happens after the four years are used up?

The discount ends even if you are still enrolled. Your membership continues at the full standard rate for your country unless you cancel. Budget for that conversion date rather than discovering it on a statement.

YouTube Premium student discount 2026

YouTube Premium Student in the US costs $8.99 per month on the web or Android, as of August 2026. It went up a dollar in the April 2026 price hike, when Individual moved to $15.99 (USA Today and Android Authority both reported the student jump from $7.99 to $8.99 in April 2026). If you subscribe through Apple’s App Store instead of youtube.com, every tier costs more — our own dated catalog shows US Individual at $20.99 on iOS.

That is the deal: roughly half off the web price, in exchange for proving you are a student every single year, for at most four years.

But here is the part almost nobody covering this query says out loud: in much of the world, the normal price is already cheaper than the American student price. Nigeria’s standard Individual plan is ₦2,200 = $1.63 per month (our dated App Store row, 29 Aug 2026) — less than a fifth of what a US student pays. The student discount is a lever inside your country, not the cheapest path overall.

How the verification actually works

Google does not check your student status itself. A company called SheerID does, and the flow is documented on YouTube’s help page:

Go to the student plan landing page for Premium.
Type your school into the SheerID form. If it appears, student plans exist there.
Most students are verified instantly. If not, you upload documents and SheerID reviews them manually — within about 20 minutes in the US, up to 48 hours elsewhere.

Two rules matter more than the sign-up itself:

Annual re-verification. You get an email near the end of each year; renew within 30 days of expiry via youtube.com/purchases.
Four-year cap. After four successful yearly verifications, the discount ends — even if you are still enrolled.

Miss the yearly check and this happens

The subscription does not stop. On your next billing date it silently converts to the full standard Individual rate for your country. That is how students end up paying $15.99 for a plan they think still costs $8.99. Put the renewal date in your calendar the day you sign up — same mechanic we document in the auto-renewal trap.

Wait — isn’t the country discount bigger than the student discount?

Now the inversion: the US student plan is $8.99. A regular adult in Nigeria pays $1.63 without proving anything to SheerID. Even India’s web-listed price — around ₹149/month on youtube.com (Google India pricing page, checked Aug 2026) — undercuts the American student rate by nearly half. And India also sells prepaid Premium packs that run out instead of auto-renewing, which sidesteps the silent-conversion problem entirely.

The catch, and we will not pretend otherwise: these prices are tied to your Google account country, a payment method issued there, and local billing rules. You cannot buy them from outside. If you genuinely study or live in that market, that low price is your legitimate deal. If not, chasing it means changing account country, sourcing a foreign card, and burning Play balance — a bad trade documented in the cheapest-country guide.

A student discount halves one country’s price. Your country choice sets the base the halving applies to.

Student versus iOS versus web

The channel you subscribe through is priced separately from the plan. Subscribing inside the iOS app costs more because Apple’s commission is baked into the price — US Individual is $20.99 on iOS against $15.99 on the web after the hike. Student eligibility does not remove that gap, so always compare against the youtube.com checkout, never the App Store row. Practical note: students are exactly the people who sign up on their phone. Signing up in a mobile browser at youtube.com instead of inside the iOS app saves real money every month of those four years.

Three things have to agree

The student plan is sold and priced per Google account country, and all of these must line up:

Your Google account country.
An institution SheerID can verify, in that same country.
A payment method issued in that country.

If you study in a lower-priced market, you get that market’s student rate legitimately — you are the customer Google priced the plan for. If you do not, the fix is not available to you without moving all three things, which Google controls and slows deliberately.
