“Apple tax” here means store commission passed into the in-app price, not a government levy. Apple takes a cut of subscriptions billed through its App Store. Many vendors raise the iOS sticker to cover it. The same plan on the vendor’s own website usually costs less. Features do not change. Only the billing rail does.

This is the cheapest saving on the whole site that does not involve changing country, card, or household. It takes ten minutes and has no ban story attached.

The short version: subscribe on the web, not in the app. Concretely, YouTube Premium Individual in the US has cost $15.99 on the web since June 2026 but $20.99 if you sign up inside the iPhone app — $60 a year for the identical plan (AndroidHeadlines, June 2026; prices confirmed on Apple’s own App Store listing, July 2026).

Which services split prices between app and web

Service Inside the iOS app On the vendor website What you save
YouTube Individual, US $20.99 $15.99 $5/mo, ~$60/yr
YouTube Family, US $34.99 $26.99 $8/mo, ~$96/yr
YouTube Individual, India ₹289 (App Store row, verified 29 Aug 2026) ₹149 (reported) ~₹140/mo
ChatGPT Plus, US $19.99 $20 — no markup either way nothing; channel-neutral
Spotify, all countries n/a new signups always bill on web no markup exists
NordVPN, monthly deals IAP list price site promos undercut app-store rows (vendor-stated) varies by deal

Sources: our App Store catalogue scrape dated 29 Aug 2026 for every in-app figure; AndroidHeadlines and The Verge (June 2026) for the YouTube web price; NordVPN’s own pricing page, which states website deals cost less than buying elsewhere (checked Aug 2026). India’s web figure comes from published plan pages rather than our own verification, so treat ₹149 as reported, not scraped.

Two entries deserve a second look:

  • ChatGPT Plus is channel-neutral: roughly $20 whether you pay OpenAI directly or through Apple in the US. There is no tax to dodge here — but also no reason to stay on Apple billing, since OpenAI’s web checkout is the only path that accepts normal cards without gift-card drama.
  • Claude Pro inverts the story. Anthropic charges a flat $20 everywhere on claude.ai, but its iOS subscription shows each storefront’s local price book — Pakistan $17.69, Japan ¥3,000 = $18.86, India ₹1,999 = $20.88 (our rows, 29 Aug 2026). For some countries the app route is actually cheaper than the flat web rate. Channel savings are per-vendor, not universal.

How to switch an existing subscription off Apple billing

  1. Open iOS Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions.
  2. Cancel the Apple-billed plan. Nothing shuts off early — you keep access until the date you already paid through.
  3. In Safari (or any browser), go to the vendor’s website and subscribe with the same underlying account: Google for YouTube, OpenAI for Plus, Spotify for Spotify.
  4. Confirm the old plan no longer appears in your App Store subscription list before assuming anything.

Two traps worth naming:

  • Do not subscribe on the web while Apple is still collecting. Double billing is common and refunds then require two companies to cooperate: how to get a refund when regional pricing fails.
  • Resubscribe in the browser, not inside the iOS app. Signing up from within the app routes you straight back to Apple billing, which makes the whole exercise a round trip to nowhere. youtube.com works fine in Safari on the same phone.

If you are leaving an intro-priced deal behind, read the auto-renewal trap first so you know what the renewal rate will be.

Fixing the channel is the overpayment you can remove without touching country settings, card BINs, or household sharing rules. Do that first. Only then look at country tables if you still want more savings.

When you are stuck paying Apple

Some products are IAP-only on iOS, and for those the App Store route is the route:

  • Claude Pro on iOS is an App Store subscription — though as shown above, that can occasionally work in your favor depending on storefront: cheapest country for Claude Pro.
  • Adobe’s student plan renews higher if you started billing through the app, so students should start their term on adobe.com, not in-app.
  • Our live boards for YouTube, ChatGPT, Netflix, Microsoft 365, Notion, and the three VPNs are all App Store catalogue prices. They rank countries honestly, but they are not a claim that web billing matches them. Microsoft 365 Personal Egypt $4.74 versus US $9.99 is the App Store row; microsoft.com may differ. Pakistan Netflix Standard at $2.89 against US $19.99 is likewise a country book, not a channel play — paying through Apple in the US does not transport you to Pakistan pricing.

Do not confuse channel (web vs iOS) with country (which price book applies). Channel is inside the rules. Country is eligibility and enforcement. People merge the two and then take a risky region path to save what a plain browser checkout would have saved anyway. Family plans multiply the mistake: paying a US Family bill through Apple instead of Google is a channel tax stacked on top of an already expensive storefront.

Gift cards, region changes, and other fine print

  • Apple gift card credit can fund in-app subscriptions — unusual among payment rails. Same-region App Store balance paid every YouTube, Claude, Netflix, Microsoft 365, and NordVPN row we checked on 29 Aug 2026. OpenAI is the exception: it rejects gift cards entirely.
  • Changing your Apple ID region requires a zero balance and canceled subscriptions (support.apple.com, HT201389, April 2026), plus a local payment method for the new store. That is real friction, which is exactly why the channel switch above beats the region switch for most people. If a region move is genuinely warranted, use a spare Apple ID and read the risk sections on any guide before committing.
  • Policies move. Check the vendor’s current help page for your country before assuming the split still holds. If external checkout has been disabled in your storefront, the in-app price is the price.

Bottom line: the Apple tax is a default you were steered into, not a law of physics. Ten minutes of Settings and one browser tab removes it, permanently, in your own currency.
