Are ChatGPT and Mistral the same product?

No. OpenAI's Plus plan is a $20-class general assistant. Mistral Pro is Le Chat from the French lab, priced in a lower band. Different models, different apps, different privacy stories. A cheap Mistral month does not include OpenAI's image stack or custom GPTs.

Is Mistral cheaper in the United States too?

Yes. Pro is $14.99 against Plus at $19.99 on our dated App Store rows, verified Aug 29, 2026. That is five dollars a month, about $60 a year, before you even look abroad.

Does OpenAI's $8 Go plan undercut Mistral?

On sticker, yes — Go is $8 in the US, Pro is $14.99. They are not the same tier. Go is extra volume on OpenAI's cheaper rung. Pro is Mistral's main paid plan. Compare Go to Mistral only if volume-on-OpenAI was the whole job.

Where is the gap widest?

The UK and Hungary, in dollar terms: Mistral is $20.32 and $22.25 there against ChatGPT at $27.10 and $28.62. The Philippines is the other way you feel it locally: ₱799 versus ₱999. India is close — ₹1,499 ($15.65) versus ₹1,999 ($20.88).

Will a VPN alone get me a cheaper price on either one?

No. Both dated rows are App Store prices. Billing follows the Apple ID country and a matching payment method. An IP address is not a Philippine card.

The $20-assistant genre (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity) crowded Mistral out of most roundups. The price table did not. If the job is “a capable chat plan for less than twenty dollars,” Mistral is the row those roundups skipped.

Mistral wins every overlapping market in that list. ChatGPT still has Go at $8 in the US if the only problem was free-tier volume. That is a different product than Plus, and a different product than Mistral Pro.

Are these the same product?

No. Plus is OpenAI’s everyday paid assistant — images, voice, custom GPTs, Codex, Deep Research. Pro is Mistral’s Le Chat paid plan. EU buyers sometimes care that Mistral is the European lab. Feature-hunters who need the OpenAI toolbox will not be talked into Mistral by a $5 gap. Budget-hunters who were about to pay $20 “because everyone does” should look at this table first.

OpenAI has no annual Plus option (help center). Mistral’s web billing can differ from the App Store row; we date IAP.

Where each one is genuinely cheap

Both cheapest in the Philippines. Mistral’s discount versus its own US price is milder (−14%) than ChatGPT’s (−19%), but Mistral’s US price was already lower, so the floor is still $12.92 versus $16.16.

Hungary and the UK are expensive for both, and still cheaper on Mistral.

If you need OpenAI’s toolbox, pay Plus (or Go, or Pro 5x) and stop shopping Mistral on features. If you wanted a paid chat plan under $20, Mistral Pro is cheaper in the US and cheaper in every overlapping country we dated. The $20 club is a habit, not a law.
