You sign in with your institution’s email, click “Get free education plan” under Settings → Upgrade plan, and a one-member workspace gets every Plus feature without a card ever being charged. The same paid tier costs $11.99/month through the US App Store (our scraper verified it Aug 29, 2026), so a four-year degree on the free plan avoids roughly $575 of subscription fees at the monthly rate.
But the honest catch sits in the fine print: the free plan covers exactly one member, verification runs entirely off a school email domain, and K-12 students are excluded outright. Here is what qualifies, what limits apply, and when paying the $10–12 anyway is the smarter move.
Who actually qualifies
Notion’s help center (notion.com/help/notion-for-education, accessed August 2026) lists hard requirements:
- You are a student or educator at an accredited college or university recognized in the World Higher Education Database (WHED). It does not have to be a
.eduaddress — thousands of international university domains qualify because the check is against the WHED list, not the TLD. - Your Notion account uses that school email. If you signed up with Gmail, change the account email first in settings; Notion accepts no student IDs, letters, or other documents as substitutes.
- You are on the Free plan already paying for Plus? Downgrade first (Settings → Billing → Change plan) and then claim the education offer.
- The workspace has one member only. Remove extra members before upgrading or the option will not work.
- You upgrade from desktop or web, never the mobile app.
If the button is missing but your school is WHED-listed, Notion support asks you to email them so the domain gets allowlisted. Separately, student organizations (clubs, societies) can apply for a different free Plus track with unlimited members — but only for volunteer orgs, one application each.
K-12 students and teachers do not qualify for either. Notion’s own suggestion: stay on the Free plan, which still has unlimited pages and blocks.

How it compares to paying for Plus

Two things stand out. First, the country game barely matters for Notion: the gap between the cheapest and most expensive storefront we verify is around 35%, versus 50–90% swings for streaming services. Chasing a cheaper App Store region saves about $1.56 a month over the US; billing yearly saves more than that with zero risk to your account.
One warning for team buyers: Plus is priced per member. A five-person project team pays five times any number above, which is exactly why Notion keeps the student-org offer separate.
The honest catches before you sign up
Your workspace is capped at one member forever on this plan. Group projects force a choice: invite collaborators as guests (up to 100, but guests have limited rights) or move to a paid/team plan. Many students hit this wall in second year and quietly pay for Business instead.
Everything hinges on the school email. Universities routinely deactivate alumni mailboxes within months of graduation. Since Notion sends password resets there, losing the inbox risks losing the account. Graduating is the moment to change your account email to a personal one — and note Notion’s terms tie the education offer to enrollment, so treat continued use after graduating as goodwill, not a right. Unlike Spotify or Apple Music, which re-verify enrollment on a schedule and cut you off automatically, Notion documents no re-check on its help page as of August 2026. That is convenient today and worth planning around anyway.
No AI included. The headline perk students ask about — Notion AI — is not bundled with Plus anymore. AI features draw from a separate allowance and generally need an add-on or a higher tier once it runs dry. Budget for that separately if it is the reason you wanted Plus.
