How do I actually move my Spotify account to another country?

Through Spotify's own account page, not a VPN app. With Premium you click Update next to your payment method and enter one issued in the new country; changes apply from the next billing date. Can I change my Spotify country with just a VPN?

No. Checkout wants a payment method issued in the destination country, so an Istanbul IP with a US Visa is exactly the combination that gets declined. Since September 2025 Spotify's terms also state the account should be created in your country of residence.

Will I lose my playlists if I change region?

Usually not. Your playlists, liked songs and followers travel with the account. What breaks is catalog availability: tracks not licensed in the new market grey out, and offline downloads stop working until you re-download from the new storefront.

What happens to Family, Duo or Student plans after a region change?

Family members follow the plan manager's country, so the whole plan has to be in one market. Duo means two people in one market. Student verification is national and usually has to be redone for the new country through SheerID.

Do Spotify gift cards still work for changing country?

No. Spotify discontinued gift cards globally in 2026 according to its own support pages. Old unredeemed codes still work but only in the country they were sold in, so they cannot fund a move abroad.

Is Turkey still worth moving my Spotify account to?

Why did my card keep getting declined after I moved countries?

Most often the card issuer country does not match the account country yet, or the bank flags the first foreign-market charge. Repeated failed attempts can temporarily lock payments on the account per Spotify community reports, so wait before retrying with the same card.

How to change your Spotify region (2026)

Spotify’s help pages are the source of truth for the button sequence, and we re-checked them this month. The part that never changes is payment country. If you cannot pay with a method issued in the destination market, the rest of this page is tourism.

And yes, the savings are real on paper. Our dated rows from 29 Aug 2026 put Spotify Individual at $1.18 in Nigeria, $1.37 in Pakistan, $1.45 in India and $2.07 in Turkey versus $12.99 in the US. This is still not a “move to country X and save $Y” article, because checkout has to accept a method issued in the new country — and since September 2025, Spotify’s terms say your account belongs where you live.

The official way to change your region

Straight from Spotify’s support article on country settings (checked August 2026):

With Premium: open your account page, click Update next to your payment method, and enter a new payment method “issued in your new country or region”. Changes take effect from your next billing date.
On Free: go to Edit profile, scroll to Country or region, pick the new one, save. Spotify adds a telling note: the dropdown “only shows when you’re actually there.” That is a geo-check on the free path too.
Facebook/Apple signups have to change their country in those services as well, because Spotify mirrors them.

That’s it. No VPN step anywhere in the official flow — because Spotify assumes you moved.

What the terms of service now say

In September 2025 Spotify rewrote its terms: accounts should be created in your country of residence, with explicit language against misrepresenting where you live to get different pricing. Two things follow from that:

The legit path is genuinely moving — residence, then billing, then account country.
A VPN-only hop is no longer just “likely to fail at checkout”; it is outside the contract. Spotify told Android Authority back in 2024 that a VPN alone does not trigger a ban, but the ToS gives them grounds to act if they want to. Treat the risk as real, especially on a login holding ten years of liked songs.

One more door closed: gift cards are discontinued globally per Spotify’s support pages (checked Aug 2026). Old codes still redeem, but only in their sale country — the classic gift-card funding trick for region moves is dead.

A practical order of operations

Decide whether the login is disposable. If you cannot accept losing the account, do not move it for a price difference.
Export a library backup. Official data export, plus playlist copies. Details: can I keep Spotify playlists when changing country?
Understand your plan. Student verification is national (expect to redo SheerID). Family members live in the manager’s country. Duo is two people in one market.
Get a payment method issued in the destination. Virtual cards only help when the issuing country matches. A US Revolut card is still a foreign card in Lagos or Istanbul.
Run Spotify’s own flow (above) and confirm the currency on the sheet before paying. Still seeing your old currency? You did not move.
Check playback, not just the receipt. Greyed tracks are licensing, not proof of failure.

Two timing traps: changes apply from the next billing date, so note when that lands before you start. And keep the old card on file until the new one charges once — removing the only working method mid-move is how people end up dropped to Free with a half-locked library. Spotify community threads also report that repeated failed card attempts can temporarily lock payments, so space out your retries instead of hammering the same card.

What a VPN is for, and what it is not

A VPN shows you the destination marketing page. It can also trip extra fraud checks. It cannot issue a local card, and it cannot keep a mismatched BIN alive at renewal.
