On nordvpn.com/pricing (accessed August 2026), every plan shows its renewal next to the intro price: the two-year Basic deal costs $94.23 for the first 27 months, then renews at $139.08/year. Complete renews at $219.48/year and Prime at $296.28/year.

That is roughly a 47% jump over what you paid per year on the intro, and more than double the headline “$3.49/month” impression. Most VPN review sites bury this behind affiliate haze or say prices “may increase.” NordVPN’s own order form is more honest than its marketing — read the small line under the button.

Notice something: the 27-month intro works out to about $41.88 per year, and the renewal is $139.08. The discount was never a “NordVPN costs $3.49” price — it was a first-term promotional rate, disclosed on the checkout if you look past the big savings percentage.

Your three escape hatches

1. Turn off auto-renew the day you subscribe. Go to your Nord Account dashboard and disable it immediately. You keep every day of the term you paid for, and nothing charges you at the standard rate. This takes thirty seconds and is the single best move in VPN buying.

2. Cancel and resubscribe at the promo rate. When the term ends, buy again as a fresh subscription instead of letting it renew at $139.08. Promo deals run nearly year-round; worst case you wait a few weeks or pay one month at list. NordVPN does not prohibit this, and reviewers openly recommend it (VPNCompare, 2026: “You can always re-subscribe to grab a fresh promotional deal”).

The App Store plans don’t have this problem — they’re just worse value

The renewal panic people post screenshots about comes from the website long-term plans. App Store subscriptions work differently:

Monthly IAP: bills every month at the storefront’s listed price. There is no teaser month. US $13.99 stays $13.99 until Apple changes the catalog price (with your approval) or you change storefronts.
12-month IAP: one upfront charge covering twelve months — US $83.99, Turkey $9.60 — then another identical charge at renewal if auto-renew stays on. It looks like a price hike because it’s a large charge, not because the rate changed.

Do the cash math before choosing: the website 27-month Basic deal is ~$94 total. Twelve months of US App Store yearly alone is $83.99. Even with the renewal hike, the website deal is far cheaper over three years than staying on US app billing — if you remember to dodge the renewal using hatch #1 or #2 above.

One warning: if you hold both a website plan and an app subscription, they renew independently through different billers (Nord vs Apple). Cancel each in its own place — Nord Account dashboard for web, iOS Settings → Subscriptions for app.
